Hand tracking for enhanced gesture recognition on interactive multi-touch surfaces

چکیده
Recently, interactive surfaces with multi-touch sensors based on frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) have seen increased attention in research and commerce. In this paper, we present a new method of gathering data about the users’ gestures on an interactive table beyond simple binary touch information. In addition to the infrared light emitters at the rim of the interaction surface, a second infrared light source is placed above an interactive table to create shadows of hands and arms. By tracking these shadows with the same rear-mounted camera, several consecutive and disjoint surface contacts can be traced back to the same user, thereby enabling new interaction techniques. We demonstrate this approach at the example of a virtual whiteboard with persistent color assignments for each participant.

Applying mean shift and motion detection approaches to hand tracking in sign language
Hand gesture recognition is very important to communicate in sign language. In this paper, an effective object tracking and hand gesture recognition method is proposed. This method is combination of two well-known approaches, the mean shift and the motion detection algorithm. The mean shift algorithm can track objects based on the color, then when hand passes the face occlusion happens. Several...
متن کاملSeveral Sensor Approaches that Retrofit Large Surfaces for Interactivity
Several different techniques are described for turning a large wall into an interactive surface. These include capacitive sensing of arm and body gesture, scanning laser rangefinders for tracking hands above video walls, passive tracking of knocks on large plates of glass with distributed acoustic pickups, and the detection of touch via frustrated total internal reflection.
متن کاملDiagram Editing on Interactive Displays Using Multi-touch and Pen Gestures
Creating and editing graphs and node-link diagrams by means of digital tools are crucial activities in domains such as software or business process modeling. However, these tools have several drawbacks with regard to interaction techniques and usability. In order to address these issues, we investigate the promising combination of pen and multi-touch input on interactive displays. In this work,...

We show how multi-touch hand gestures in combination with foot gestures can be used to perform typical basic spatial tasks within a Geographic Information System (GIS). The work is motivated by the high complexity of User Interfaces common GIS usually display and which requires a high degree of expertise form its users. Recent developments in interactive surfaces that enable the construction of...
متن کاملInertial Sensor-Based Touch and Shake Metaphor for Expressive Control of 3D Virtual Avatars
In this paper, we present an inertial sensor-based touch and shake metaphor for expressive control of a 3D virtual avatar in a virtual environment. An intuitive six degrees-of-freedom wireless inertial motion sensor is used as a gesture and motion control input device with a sensor fusion algorithm. The algorithm enables user hand motions to be tracked in 3D space via magnetic, angular rate, an...
